Meet NeuroEdge® Founder & CEO Jennifer Shipley
NeuroEdge® Coaching is founded on the core belief is that every person is naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. Since 2012, we have worked with professionals, families, students, and children to help them address their unique challenges and be their best selves.
I was involved in a bicycle/car accident in my early twenties that, among other injuries, left me unconscious for 90 minutes. That accident inspired a life-long interest in the brain and how it works. With years of study, and a continued awe of those six inches between our ears, I now lecture and teach on the neuroscience of "flow," emotional intelligence, coaching with the brain in mind, the neuroscience of intuition, and other brain-related topics.
I was introduced to coaching in 2012, and discovered that I loved partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process in order to inspire them to maximize their personal and professional potential. I attended the Coaches Training Institute and obtained my professional certification through the International Coach Federation.
During the first several years, I worked mainly with high-powered executives, professionals, and political appointees. One day, a client asked if I would also be willing to work with his 14-year-old son, who was struggling in school.
It was so gratifying to see how just a handful of sessions helped him in many different ways. After working together, he was happily able to sit at the kitchen table and focus on his school work, enjoy his friendships more, and tolerate distractions at school that used to derail his ability to participate and focus. He no longer had to close himself in a windowless room with white noise playing in order to do his homework. He was able to manage his commitment to playing lacrosse, and was more resilient and calm at school and at home.
His younger sister decided she wanted to try NeuroEdge® Coaching too, and after several sessions she shared that she was sleeping better and feeling more confident and happy at school and with friends. Their father cherished how he was better able to connect with his children in quiet moments, marveling at the insights they were more willing to share with him.
Working with those two remarkable kids reminded me of my own experience growing up. I was a competitive diver and an AP Honors student, and I felt so much stress as I tried to keep up with school, sports, and extracurriculars, as well as ensure my academic future and manage my everyday life. Without mentors and other adults in my life who made me feel validated, I may not have been able to succeed. I needed to feel seen and heard about what I was going through at that critical point in my development.
When kids feel seen and heard, they're no longer only pushing against everyone else; they have a safe space to look inside and figure out who they really want to be. Coaching allows me to help kids be their naturally happy, healthy selves, and it's especially rewarding to hear their parents celebrate the success of their children.
In 2010, I discovered NeurOptimal® neurofeedback when looking for a solution for chronic pain I had experienced since that accident in my twenties. I began to experience amazing results with NeurOptimal®, like improved focus and word recall, increased resilience to stress (and, surprisingly, lightning quick ping pong skills!). I became a certified NeurOptimal® trainer in 2013 and integrated neurofeedback into my coaching practice, so that my clients could experience the benefits of a drug-free and non-invasive way to train both the brain and the mind.
Coaching kids and teens and sharing the benefits of neurofeedback is now my craft and my passion. I am continually integrating new tools and finding new ways to help my clients and their families tame performance anxiety, manage stress, and feel better and happier.
